Mama’s Day 2015 Raises $176,000

San Diego’s top chefs, restaurants and resorts return for monumental event to support San Diegans living with HIV/AIDS or cancer

FOR REVIEW AND APPROVAL – San Diego – May 14, 2015 – On the evening of Friday, May 8, approximately 750 guests attended the 24th annual Mama’s Day 2015 raising $176,500 for Mama’s Kitchen (, a non-profit organization which prepares and delivers hot, nutrition-specific meals free of charge to men, women and children affected by AIDS or cancer throughout San Diego County. The funds raised will provide 57,680 home delivered meals for Mama’s Kitchen’s clients.

Held at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine, the poolside affair featured an amazing line-up of more than 55 of San Diego’s top restaurants and executive chefs. Sam “The Cooking Guy” Zien returned for the seventh consecutive year as the event’s culinary host, entertaining VIPs at a private, exclusive pre-event reception. Zien performed a cooking demonstration at the special reception with a hosted bar.

“An amazing night was had by all spotlighting our organization and mission,” said Alberto Cortés, executive director, Mama’s Kitchen. “I would like to thank the volunteers, sponsors, guests, donors and Mama’s Kitchen staff for their support in fulfilling our mission of providing nutritious meals for San Diego’s critical ill.”

Guests mingled and sampled an amazing array of entrees, beverages and desserts offered by San Diego’s top restaurants. Along with the delicious treats, guests also bid on an extensive silent auction. The best selling auction items included a private dinner with Sam “The Cooking Guy” and a Skybox for 20 guests at PETCO Park. Mama’s Day 2015 was presented by Nordstrom and hosted by Sycuan Casino.

About Mama’s Kitchen 

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Mama’s Kitchen was founded when volunteers from the AIDS Assistance Fund discovered that many of their clients were becoming too ill to take care of themselves. They realized that a reliable home meal delivery service was needed to ensure that these individuals would continue to receive nutritious, life-sustaining food. In 2004, Mama’s Pantry was opened, to provide individuals with HIV/AIDS who are able to prepare meals the opportunity to supplement their nutritional needs. Mama’s Kitchen has served over seven million meals since it was founded and has never turned away a client who qualified for our services. Our commitment to our clients remains unchanged. Today, the organization has expanded its service to San Diegans affected by either AIDS or cancer. Mama’s Kitchen provides three meals a day, for every day of the year, free of charge, to approximately 350 men, women, and children in San Diego County.
