Today, our CEO Eva Matthews was joined by U.S. Navy veteran, volunteer, and board member April Heinze to deliver Mama’s Kitchen’s milestone 14 millionth meal. This special delivery was made to U.S. Army veteran Hal, an 84-year-old Mama’s Kitchen client who has received medically tailored meals from Mama’s Kitchen since July 2021 and has been battling AIDS since the early 1980s.
With San Diego County having one of the largest veteran populations, it’s no surprise that they make up 13% of our clients.

Research shows that veterans are more likely to face complex, chronic conditions that could be effectively managed through proper nutrition. That is why this momentous delivery is crucial — While we have served veterans for 35 years, it is necessary to highlight the unique challenges facing our veteran population.
To Hal and the 375 veterans we will serve this year, this 14 millionth meal is for them. It is an honor to be of service to those who have given so much in service to us. We look forward to these next million meals with excitement. Everyone, including veterans, deserves nutritious food, so we will continue to enhance our services for veterans and those battling critical illness.
