Last Sunday, at our 33rd Annual Tree of Life Ceremony to commemorate World AIDS Day, we had the honor of giving two awards in recognition of outstanding individuals who have been crucial in supporting the continued work of Mama’s Kitchen. This heartfelt celebration allowed us to recognize some remarkable volunteers whose commitment has been the foundation of Mama’s Kitchen’s mission for many years. Every year since 2021, we have presented two awards:

The Red Ribbon Award

The Red Ribbon Award recognizes long-time Mama’s Kitchen volunteers whose efforts have significantly impacted the mission of Mama’s Kitchen in supporting people living with AIDS.

Patricia Pasquil was the recipient of this year’s Red Ribbon award, a volunteer who has contributed more than 22 years of service and close to 3,000 hours to Mama’s Kitchen and this community. Pat Pasquill first became involved with Mama’s Kitchen in 2002 when she and her daughters were introduced to our organization at the AIDS Walk. Pat began marching in the AIDS walk as a way to stand up to stigma and discrimination after her brother-in-law was the victim of a tragic hate crime due to his sexual orientation.

After learning about the mission of Mama’s Kitchen, she soon became a steadfast part of our volunteer team. Pat has watched as our organization has evolved, responding to the urgent needs of the day, and has been a significant part of how Mama’s Kitchen maintains its mission focus. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Pat was part of a crucial small team of volunteers who increased their hours in our kitchen. We truly would not have been able to keep up without her. Today, Pat can be found in our kitchen and staging area four days a week and is truly seen as part of our staff.

The Humanitarian Award

The Humanitarian Award recognizes members of the community who have made a significant commitment and demonstrated dedication in response to the AIDS epidemic in San Diego.

Martin De Jesus Briceño serves as the Lead Case Manager for the Coordinated HIV Services Program at Neighborhood House Association and has been making an impact there for 22 years. Martin has changed the lives of thousands of San Diegans living with HIV. Before joining Neighborhood House, Martin studied medicine in Mexico and opened his own clinic to bring access to HIV treatment that his community did not have at the time.

Over the years, Martin has referred countless patients in need of nutrition services to Mama’s Kitchen and is diligent in providing support to his clients. He always goes above and beyond, even coming to the Kitchen to pick up bags to deliver to clients who are in urgent need of meals. Martin has contributed to San Diego’s progress in ensuring access to HIV care in immeasurable ways,

These extraordinary awardees epitomize the spirit of compassion, selflessness, and dedication that embodies Mama’s Kitchen. Their commitment to serving the community, exemplified through years of service, stands as a testament to the spirit of giving back and making a difference. We extend our deepest gratitude to Pat and Martin for their tremendous contributions, unwavering support, and continued dedication to our mission. Through their service, they have not only nourished bodies but also uplifted spirits that needed it the most.
