Important Notification: Blackbaud Data Breach
As an important stakeholder and supporter of Mama’s Kitchen, we are providing you details of a cybersecurity incident recently experienced by Blackbaud, Inc., a vendor of Mama’s Kitchen.
Blackbaud manages data management software and cloud computing software used by many nonprofit organizations. The security breach Blackbaud servers experienced have compromised some users’ data, including Mama’s Kitchen.
What happened:
In May of 2020, Blackbaud discovered and stopped a ransomware attack on their servers. After identifying the attempted attack, Blackbaud’s Cyber Security team worked with independent forensics experts and law enforcement to block and expel them from their system. While no encrypted financial information was accessed (credit cards, bank information, or social security numbers), a backup file containing contact information and donation history was accessed. This occurred at some point between February 7, 2020 and May 20, 2020.
Because protecting customers’ data a top priority, Blackbaud paid the cybercriminal’s demand with confirmation that the copy they removed had been destroyed. Based on the nature of the incident and third-party investigation (including law enforcement), Blackbaud has no reason to believe that any data was or will be misused; or will be disseminated or otherwise made available publicly. Blackbaud has also hired a third-party team of experts to continue monitoring for any activity involving potentially compromised data.
What Mama’s Kitchen is doing:
The security and privacy of our supporters and stakeholders is of the utmost importance to us. We want to emphasize that as a policy, Mama’s Kitchen never stores credit card or bank account information in our donor database systems or in our files. Our team has been actively working with Blackbaud and has been assured that the vendor has already implemented several changes that will protect our data from any subsequent incidents. We are continuing our discussions with Blackbaud and will reach out with additional details if analysis reveals more information on specific data exposure.
